Zadar – Day 1

As promised my first post about my time in Croatia is here.

The day started slow before heading out to explore the old town. It was a beautiful day which made the town seem even better. If you haven’t heard of Zadar it is a city on the coast of Croatia, and is the oldest continuously inhabited Croatian city.

The Five Wells Square

My friend Vicky and I headed out with no plan other than to explore the city and to see what we could find. What we discovered was a wonderful city filled with streets to explore and water to look out onto.

One of my favourite discoveries about Zadar was how clear the water was. You could stand on the edge of the marina and see right down to the bottom.

After a morning of exploring we headed back to our Airbnb for lunch and an afternoon of games to relax before heading out in the evening.

During the evening we headed back out into the old town and headed over to the sea organ to listen to the sounds and watch the sunset. The sea organ is an incredible creation that uses the movement of the sea and pipes under the steps to make music. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world it is definitely worth a visit.

While the clouds did mean that the sunset wasn’t as good as it could have been it was still just nice to sit and watch while chatting with friends.

We finished the evening of visiting ‘The Greeting to the Sun’. This is a monument near to the sea organ, During the day it looks rather uninteresting but at night it comes to life. It consists of solar panels that during the day soak up the suns light and then a beautiful light show is created. Taking a picture of this was not as easy as I hoped but feel free to get some amusement out of our picture attempts.

As the sun had now set, the air was getting colder so we decided that it was time to head back to the apartment to relax and get some sleep before a long day at a nearby National Park on day 2.

Well that about wraps up my first day in Croatia so I’ll be back to tell you more about my adventures in the wild soon.

Sophie xx
